Privacy and analytics

I use readership data to understand which notes people find useful and whether they lead to the projects or a conversation. This site belongs to Nacho Viejo. You can contact me at [email protected] about these choices or your data.

Your choice

Google Analytics stays off until you choose Accept analytics. Declining leaves the site fully usable. You can reopen Analytics settings at the bottom of the screen to change your choice. Withdrawing stops our analytics and clears the Google Analytics cookies set for this site; the page reloads to unload the tag. It does not erase data already sent to Google.

Your browser remembers this choice in local storage for 180 days. This preference is stored whether you accept or decline. If storage is unavailable, the choice applies only to the current page. Without JavaScript, Google Analytics does not load.

What Google Analytics receives if you accept

It receives the public page address without query parameters or fragments, a restricted campaign label or referring website, and events such as opening a note, reaching 75% of a note after at least 30 seconds with the page visible, or clicking a demo, project repository, CV PDF or contact link. The reading event is an estimate of engagement, not proof that someone read or understood the article.

Our event code does not send email addresses, message contents, full link destinations or arbitrary URL parameters. Google Analytics uses browser identifiers in its _ga and _ga_MSW6WJWN1M cookies, configured to expire after 90 days, renewed on visits with analytics enabled. Google also receives connection and browser information when its script loads. These data are not anonymous. Advertising storage, advertising personalisation and Google Signals are disabled by this site's tag.

The Analytics property retains event-level data for two months and user-level data for 14 months, with the user retention period restarting on new activity. These settings do not limit the lifetime of aggregate reports. Cookie expiry and retention of data already sent are separate.

Cloudflare and hosting

Cloudflare delivers and protects this site. Its existing Web Analytics service provides aggregate traffic and performance reports independently of the optional Google Analytics tag. Cloudflare Web Analytics does not use analytics cookies or local storage. Your Google Analytics choice does not switch off Cloudflare or the hosting service's operational processing.
